SOCIAL EXPERIMENTS TO FIGHT POVERTY- AN INTRODUCTION

HOW ESTHER DUFLO WANTS TO CHANGE SOCIAL AID

“In technology, we spend so much time experimenting, fine-tuning, getting the absolute cheapest way to do something – so why aren’t we doing that with social policy?”

Esther Duflo belongs to the eight most influential economists worldwide (The Economist, 2008) and to the one hundred most influential people worldwide (Time Magazine, 2011).
She works as a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is founder and director of the Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J- PAL).

In the next few weeks I want to find out how our knowledge of economics is applied on one of the most important issues of our times- The fight against third- world poverty.

  • Are there new business models related to that?
  • How do microcredits work?
  • How could aid be changed?
  • Why is this important to us?

To my mind, you chose a very relevant and actual topic. I am pretty curious how you will work it out in the upcoming weeks. What I really like is that you already give the reader a vague structure & idea which questions you will concentrate on. A minus point is the shortness of your post – simply outlining your topic could work as an introduction, but not as a whole text. So for next week, you shoud try to put a little more information in it, maybe with subheads and several parts….nevertheless well done Kalinkalink 🙂

    2. Yes, you are right. It should have been an introduction. I’ll better write it in the headline!

    3. Short and concise, great topic (you know I am interested in this approach, too) and a good example for an introduction as I am now really sure what your researches will be about.
For my taste the layout of the post is not that good yet (headline should be a little smaller, text either left-aligned or in the middle) but this is just small things that can be changed easily.
I must admit that I am already excited about your next post!!! 🙂

    4. I think you have chosen a very relevant topic. I know how you had struggles in the beginning about how to tailor your topic to the course. Now I think you have done a good job to introduce Esther Duflo as one of the most important economists and how she uses her power in other fields.
Your post of this week was an informative and straight to the point introduction where you present your topic, give an incentive through the video and let us know what to expect from you in the future. Nevertheless, I think it would have been enough to just cite once, since it is the very same quotation – just to be more efficient for future posts! Also some more illustrations, graphs or pictures would cool to look at!
Keep on doing this and I keep on reading! 🙂
